The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) provides a standardized and scientifically backed system for evaluating breeding dogs for heritable health conditions. OFA testing typically includes diagnostic radiographs of the hips and elbows, which are reviewed by a panel of board-certified veterinary radiologists to detect signs of dysplasia or degenerative joint disease. Additional evaluations may include cardiac auscultation or echocardiography, thyroid function panels, patellar examinations, dentition certification, and breed-specific DNA testing. All results are permanently recorded in the OFA database, contributing to a transparent, evidence-based resource for breeders, veterinarians, and buyers to make informed breeding and ownership decisions that promote the long-term health and genetic soundness of dogs.
